Times of great crisis and adversity call for times of greater solidarity and integrity. It has been prevalent for the world as a whole since time immemorial. As history has time and again proven that times of crisis have led to great innovations, discoveries, acts of compassion, kindness and ingenuity, so must it still be in this pandemic ravaged world. Cooperatives have always, since their founding been a beacon of hope and perseverance for the economically disadvantaged individuals as well as communities. The COVID pandemic of 2019/20 has not only ravaged the health of millions of individuals worldwide, it has also ravaged the morale and the economic status of the people around the globe. Realizing the urgency to address this pertinent issue, the apex body of financial cooperatives of the world has come up with the apt theme 'Inspiring Hope for a Global Community' for marking this year's International Credit Union (ICU) Day that falls on October 15 this year.
The ICU Day theme underscores the need of the global cooperative fraternity to step up and take charge to balm the economic wounds of people. Hope is the feeling that has kept the human civilization alive through greater perils and thus it should again be so in this pandemic stricken era. Principally and pragmatically, cooperatives must work for strengthening the global community illuminating hope becoming beacons of hope amongst times of economic turbulence.
This year’s theme perfectly sums up the motto of the credit unions around the world that have been mobilizing and helping their respective communities by taking up the role of economic first responders since the start of the pandemic. Economically challenged communities have found themselves hit harder than the well to do communities thus realizing the importance of credit unions even further. Hands on approach of credit unions in rural areas have been highlighted as a must in these trying times and thus are now established as an indispensable resource of the community. Cooperatives must instil and inspire hope among the people of the community that they serve, thus uplifting the people, their economic status as well as their morale.
History has it that, the International Credit Union (ICU) Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948. October 15, 2020, (29 Asoj, 2077) This 72nd anniversary of the International Credit Union Day celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement and signifies the spirit of cooperatives that are always looking out for the betterment and upliftment of the marginalized and under-privileged communities.
