Kathmandu. The Nepal Federation of Savings and Credit Cooperative Unions, NEFSCUN and the USAID-Trade and Competitiveness held elaborate discussions today to pave the way towards bringing into fruition the the eagerly-awaited financial cooperative act believed to streamline, systematize and discipline the savings and credit cooperatives.
The talk held today at the USAID office strategized plans to give a strong push to the campaign that the NEFSCUN has been clamouring for nearly one and half decade.
The NEFSCUN squad that included the Chairperson Chandra Prasad Dhakal, the Senior Vice Chairperson Damodar Adhikari, the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Shivajee Sapkota and senior officer Navin Raj Dahal held a meaningful talk with the USAID-Trade and Competitiveness team led by the Chief of Party Agnes Luz, Access to Finance Service Manager, Sanjay Jha, including others, that set out concrete plans to sit down with the key stakeholders regarding the matter.
The bilateral discussion is a part of the strategic partnership program between the two that primarily aims to strengthen the financial cooperatives in better serving the underserved communities.
NEFSCUN's CEO Dr. Shivajee Sapkota shared the endeavors made till date in the direction and wished for a strong back up from the USAID-Trade and Competitiveness in expediting the process, technical backstopping and bringing the desired results much earlier.
Likewise, Senior Officer Navin Raj Dahal reviewed the work implemented in accordance with the agreement with this agency and informed about what could be the further steps in the regard.
At the occasion, Agnes Luz, the Chief of Party of USAID-Trade and Competitiveness, took stock of the efforts made till date and commended on the significance of cfinancial cooperatives in the context of the Neplaese economy. She said she was aware of the contribution made by the cooperative sector in production, income generation, employment opprotunities and hoped much could be done in agro-tourism and digitization with the collaborative efforts.
She also informed that the policy team of the USAID-Trade and Competitiveness will lend a hand to carry forward the much needed campaign of materializing the financial cooperative act through consultative discussions among the important stakeholders including district and provincial union leaders, regulators, line ministry and other authorities.
Prior to this, programs were held at different parts of the country that saw the wide participation of the representatives from various primary savings and credit cooperatives under the topics Integration of Digital Services in the Financial Cooperatives and Integrating Business Development Service in Financial Cooperatives.
NEFSCUN, the sole peak body of financial cooperatives in the Himalyan Kingdom, has been crusading a campagin for a separate act since 2009 that is expcted to better govern the savings and credit cooperatives that,by nature, bear multitude of risks.
